Galveston Bay Fishing After Hurricane Ike
AlanP Posts 1

On September 13th, 2008 hurricane Ike made landfall directly over Galveston Island. Hurricane Ike was a category 2 storm, but as we all found out it caused damage and devastation like a category 4. Hurricane Ike stetched over 500 miles, had howling winds up to 110 mph and a storm surge of 13-20 feet. Residents up and down the gulf coast were greatly effected by this storm, but Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula were the hardest hit. Unfortunately homes, businesses, and even lives were lost due to Ike. Hopefully we all will be better prepared for the next one. It has been over a year since hurricane Ike ravaged the gulf coast and the clean up and rebuilding is still underway. I participated in the clean up of the entire Galveston bay complex from March 2009 through July 2009. I spent every day watching trees, cars, boats, parts of houses, refrigerators, telephone poles among many other things being pulled out from our bay sytem. The land clean up and rebuilding will probably last for years, but the bays and beach clean up is completed. Actually the bays in Galveston are cleaner now than they were before Ike. Fishing in Galveston has really been excellent since Ike and I see it only getting better. I have been fishing Galveston all my life and Ike didn't effect the fishing that much. I have been catching fish at the same spots that I have always caught them. The fish are healthy and the numbers are still there. As a fishing guide that is great news. Many people might still think that fishing in Galveston is not up to it's standards, but that is not true. Go to www.galveston-fishing.com to see some recent catches. The bays are clean and the fish are ready to be caught. Galveston bay is one of the best fisheries on the gulf coast so don't hesitate to visit Galveston Island and spend a quality day on the water fishing. Capt. Alan Pereyra www.galveston-fishing.com

Weather Reactions
TimberGhost Posts 3

With respect to large game animals, they tend to move prior to a somewhat significant change in weather to feed. If a good storm is coming in (low pressure system), they seem to get up and eat regardless of the time of day. If only a minor change in barometric pressure occurs, prior to a shift in weather (perhaps a light snow or a light rain) they continue to act as normal. Heavy winds tend to cause animals to bed up as do heavy downpours. This is more than likely due to the increased noise and inability to hear/smell danger.

I currently live in SE Louisiana about 30 minutes west of NO. Looking for a club/lease where I can take my kids hunting. My girls want to get into it but I would rather take them on private land instead of the WMA's in the state. If you have any leads email me at asheppard@oceaneering.com

Hi All - I am kind of new to this forum, and hunting in general, though I am an avid camper.
Anyway, I was hoping someone could tell me how rain/snow affects animals. Do their behaviors change drastically or do you just hunt like normal?

Bowhunter's vision problem and solution
TimberGhost Posts 3

About 6 years ago I began noticing that I could not clearly focus on my sight pin and target while practice shooting. At first I just pushed through practice and the season as it wasn’t too bad. However over the next couple years it had worsened to the point that I could no longer see my sight pins, primarily in hunting situations. I continued to harvest deer, however my shot placement was bad, to the point that I injured several deer and missed a bunch. I was trying everything. First I thought it was the size of my peep sight so I went to the largest size on the market at the time ¼”. That didn’t help. I then changed all my sight pins to the brightest I could find. This helped a bit but only when it was very bright outside. My confidence in my skill dropped. This in turn caused me to get very anxious when a shot presented itself, and this made things worse. I then thought that perhaps I was pulling to much weight causing me to strain so I dropped my draw weight. No help. Finally I had my peep removed. I was still unable to focus on target with my sight pin. Frustration would be an understatement. This all occurred slowly over a period of 6 or 7 years. I looked for solutions everywhere. I do wear reading glasses and I ave 20-20 vision at a distance. Several archery experts told me that it is a common problem and that there is no real solution. Anyway, earlier this year I was speaking to an archery shop staff member about this issue and he asked if I wore reading glasses. I told him I did and up close it was so bad that I used 3x’s glasses. He told me to try wearing a pair of 1x glasses when I shoot. I ran to the closest Walmart and picked a pair off the shelf, concerned I would not be able to see downrange (I tried shooting with my reading glasses but everything outside of 5 yards was a blur.) When I put them on I was amazed. I could still see clear across the store fairly clearly and at 20-30 yards everything is perfect. I rushed home and grabbed my bow. When I drew it and settled the pin on the bull (first time in years) there must have been a smile on my face. I was finally able to effectively aim again. After a month I was practicing at 40 yards and splitting arrows. I was even able to practice out to 60 yards, however that is about where the bull began blurring into the target. Anyway, I searched for an answer for quite some time and I could not get one. I was able to practice more effectively leading me to practice more than I had in years. My confidence soared again. This year I took 2 doe and 2 wall hangers. Each animal was harvested with 1 shot to the boiler room. I wanted to share this in case there is anyone out there experiencing what I had experienced. If you know someone whose accuracy is suffering and they wear reading glasses while maintaining good distant vision, pass this on to them. They will thank you for a long time. edited by TimberGhost on 1/8/2009

hunting after a full moon
TimberGhost Posts 3

Hi Ray. I also live in Michigan (for past 3 seasons), near Portland, but I do the majority of my hunting south of Jackson on private land. Where I hunt stays undisturbed so outside activity has little to no bearing on my answer. I hunt only with bow. Anyway, I keep very detailed log entries of each day I spend in the field. Going back to 1998 (1998 thru 2005 season in Connecticut) I have noted that about 3 days either side of the full moons in Sept, Oct and November I note a change in the time of day I see deer. For the most part 90% of all the deer I see at this time of the month will come 3 to 4 hours later. That goes for Michigan and Connecticut. Normally I expect to see deer anytime between sunrise and 9:30 AM, however during the full moon cycle I start seeing animals between 10 and 11 am. Looking at my logs I note that young ones tend to come first, and then if I decide to stick it out long enough (I am always in 1 to 1 1/2 hours before morning twilight) older animals tend to come by later. If the full moon occurs during the rut it appears to have no effect on movement unless temps are a bit warmer early in the morning. I generally do not hunt evenings (not nearly as much as morning) but on the hunts I have had in the evening seeing deer has been hit or miss regardless of the moons phase.

Moss Springs Packing
mogambow Posts 2

Four of us had a local packer take us into one of its archery elk and deer drop camp sites in the Eagle Cap Wilderness mid September of this year. We were all experienced elk hunters. The packer informed us there was also a lot of deer in the area, as well as elk. He told us the camping spot had a good artesian spring for water. We rode eight miles from Moss Springs to Jim White Ridge. The packer and two wranglers did an excellent job getting us to his spot. That turned out to be the highlight of the trip. We were disappointed to discover that the artesian spring was nothing more that a seep puddle with a straw thin outflow (this after the packer took several minutes looking for it) . The camp was located inside the edge of a four year old forest fire (lot of new blowdowns). All hunting would be down hill since we were located on top of a ridge.
We got camp set up, and the next day would be our first day of elk hunting. We ventured out 2-3 miles south of camp (the direction suggested by the packer). At the end of that day we compared notes with each other and all came to the same conclusion. There were no animals within miles of our camp. There were no rubs, no game trails, only year old white droppings, no bugling, and no beds. The next day a local resident hunter with two horses came through our camp area to look for sign in our area. He came back through our camp near the end of the day; his horses lathered, and said he was going somewhere else because there was no sign of any game.
At this point we realized we were put in an area that we had zero chance of harvesting an animal. For me personally, I was always concerned that a packer has no incentive for putting a drop camp in a good area (he'll use those for his guides). I was hoping it would at least be a fair area. I figured in our case the packer either had not been in that camp in years, or just did not care where he put us. And we were to be there for nine days.
At the end of the second day we hoped we could salvage part of our hunting season if we could end our pack trip early, so we contacted the packer by satellite phone. The best he could do was get us out on the seventh day. We did hunt miles from camp those remaining five days in all directions, and still no sign that any animals ever spent time in that area. We never even saw a doe deer. Ironically there was more elk sign at the packer's corral near the trailhead that there was anywhere near the drop camp.
The packer had other people take us out. He was presumably busy.
Our high emotional anticipation became a nosedive into an expensive disappointment. And our greatest frustration was watching our hunting time evaporate while being stuck in a deadzone drop camp. OUCH.
