topic: Big Guns For Deer Hunts... Right...

TheFloridaBoySouthernGentlemen1989

Hello my names Ryan I have been hunting for about 11 to 12 years, I am 18 years old. I recently was watching the hunting channel a couple months back and noticed that there was this guy talking about how you need a big gun to take down a deer, my dad was sitting there and we both agreed on one thing that what this guy was talking about wasn't right. We both threw out our agreements that a small caliber rifle even a little cricket (.22) gun could kill a deer just as dead as a 300 Mag or any of those huge guns you see most professionals using. I don't mind him voicing his opinion because hey this is the United States Of American and he has the right to freedom of speech and I am not gonna stop him from saying what he rightfully believes. But what I would like to know is more on how many people know hunters that don't use huge rifles and take down big game like deer at 200 yards or better. I personally use a .243 and have taken a nice 125 point Whitetail a few years back at 240 yards. My dad has taken a 410 lbs wild board at 200 yards with my deer rifle. So I guess I am just asking who actually believes you need a huge rifle to take down a deer? I would like everyone from women to men, sons and daughters all to tell me what you think.

Thanks Alot,
Ryan

Sorry smweston but I have to disagree with having to use to use a caliber that high up there, maybe if your going to be taking over a 500 yard shot maybe. I personally have used since I was born and taken out into the woods a .243, which I am sure someone is going to say thats way to light to take down a deer at ranges up to 250 yards. I would have to say I would use a 45-70 which should be enough to use on a elk even a .308 should be able to take a Elk down if you place to bullet right. But I believe a all around rifle for small game is a .22 for medium size game and up to the size of white tail deer and boars that can range up to 410 lbs a .243 but something for elk I would have to say would be at least a 30-30, possibly a 308, 45-70. But hey its your choice and what I would do is think about other hunts you'll probably want to go on in the near future that you will want "Bertha" to go with you, also make sure that you like the feel of the gun. Well I hope the advice from this 18 year old helps you out... Just like people above me have said it's not how big of a gun but where you place the bullet that actually counts.

I received the message and I’m sure several others received the e-mail as well. It’s just another scam e-mail out of Africa, these thieves hit all the websites so do not respond. Zaina55 is probably a middle aged male, working out of Nigeria.

Congress will not allow us to drill in our own back yard or import alternative fuels from Brazil. China is drilling for oil off our coast, maybe China can sell our oil back to us at $150 a barrel. Congress will allow that.

Personally I hunt with a 30-06, 165 or 180 grain bullet. Plenty of knockdown, but as mentioned above it's where you hit, not how hard. If you know your gun you should be able to shoot out to 300 yards .

Preserving the Hunting Heritage of Our Kids and Yours

Our Mission
Hunters Helping Kids, Inc. (HHK) is a Non-Profit 501c3 Organization dedicated to inspire and educate our youth in wildlife conservation and management. It is our belief that by involving our youth in outdoor shooting sports, the desire to preserve the conservation and hunting heritage will endure through future generations.
It’s All About The Kids !

About Us

Hunter’s Helping Kids has organized and promoted “The Ultimate Kids Hunt” for several years with over 400 youth attending this event as well as other hunts provided by HHK.

Our goal is a simple one. HHK wants to make it possible for any kid to hunt. We want to help by providing experienced guides and excellent locations to make a Kid’s dream come true. Just ask any of our Kids….our hunts are second to none.

By forming chapters across the nation led by Sportsmen and Sportswomen, these talented and giving individuals donate their time and experience to help our mission to take Kids hunting.

Prior to each hunting event, the Kids are schooled in gun and hunting safety, our number one priority. Our goal is to inform, inspire and encourage the kids in wildlife conservation, preservation and safety.

For each hunt, family members are encouraged to attend and to participate in each Kids achievement during the hunt, allowing wonderful memories to be created by the trip, experience and fellowship. And most importantly, to develop and encourage long-lasting friendships for many years to come. Our hunts not only include great things for the Kids, but a tighter family bond through the outdoor experience, memories and laughter. We are A Pa Chapter iN South Central Pa. If you would like more info Please let Bonnie Know @ 717-485-5529 or bonnie@huntingthebackwoods.com We are planning a funraiser for the summer so if you would like to donate anything also please let her know Bonnie will treat you well and do her best to for you. If you know of a child in need or wants to hunt let Bonnie Know that as well She works hard to set up hunts and fundraiser for HHK.

I live in Colorado and hunt Elk. They have been taken with bow , .50 cal muzzleloader and 30.06 Remington. You may want to look into a firearm with interchangable barrels. If you ever wanted to hunt Antelope then a .270 would be your best choice. This is why interchangable firearms would be my firearm of choice. Might be better to have lots of options.

Howdy Pal, I have discovered an interesting social community network yesterday. Friendx connects you with people around the globe and does also possessed lots of pretty gals and charming dude members. Nonetheless, if you’re single, who knows that you may found your life partner there? To cut things short, I could also upload blogs, videos, photos and avatars, create my own club; last but not least all users could chat online where it is absolutely hassle free. Why not you, taking a glimpse at http://www.friendx.com? Join in the group and you may discover a whole new set of features and experience that you’ve never seen before. Registration is absolutely FREE for sure. Enjoy your Day!

Dan, I dont' know if anyone has replied to you about this thread. I haven't been able to repoduce the error you mentioned. I need to change the color of the username box to let members know that they can't edit that field. We were concerned about people being "spamed" so we don't allow you to type the user's name into the text box. If you go to a members page and they've enabled to allow others to send them messages, then there will be a link to "Send me a message". When you click that link, it will take you back to your message center and populate the "To:" with the selected members username. If you click "Compose Message" while in your message center, the "To:" is a drop down box with a list of people that are your fellow enthusiasts. Let me know if your still having problems.
